Gatherings of classic tall ships have become more frequent with each passing year, attracting ever-larger crowds who come to stroll on the docks to admire the world’s most beautiful sailing ships. Recognizing this trend, and once again building on E. G. Duarte & Associates extensive nautical expertise the Navigator Class Ship project was launched.

Given Captain E. G. da Costa Duarte’s ancestral background, which stems from a long line of navigators and explorers. This project is the culmination of a number of factors based on his own experience as a Master Mariner and Naval Architect. He is backed by a core management group each with an extensive record in ship operations and management to give extra credibility to the project.

The Navigator Project is the first of an anticipated series of vessels designed with the classical lines and elegance of the turn of the century ship. In every sense of the word, she will be a comfortable modern passenger carrier emphasizing sensible arrangements for a sailing ship with tasteful and accessible luxury facilities. In no sense will the ship be projected to compete with the large cruise ship market. It will in fact be a component in a small select fleet of specialized vessels, which occupy a unique place in the world’s cruise ship industry.

The ship’s objective is to provide something considerably different in the way of adventure and exploration. This type of ship has been designed to transverse the oceans of the world including Antarctica and the Artic and yet small enough to get into many hundreds of smaller ports around the world that are inaccessible to larger cruise liners serving the mass market.

With ice class strengthening and a powerful Gas Turbine auxiliary engine consistent with fuel economy and low maintenance operation, the vessel will be capable of traveling under power over long distances, if required. This is important in terms of meeting schedules, particularly when passengers are being collected or discharged en route, a feature, which could arise on ultra long distance voyages and for the purposes of positioning the vessel for overhauls and commencing a fresh voyage. From our detailed studies, it is anticipated that the vessels will be employed in carrying share-paying passengers for a minimum of 300 days per year. This would allow adequately for dry-docking and turnaround time.

With so many opportunities to cruise in Alaska, the Baltic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and the Mexican Riviera areas, it may seem surprising to discover a small but growing group of enthusiasts heading out for strange and remote waters, where there are countless virtually untouched areas to visit and explored by the more adventurous.

On this ship the passenger takes an active role in every aspect of the expedition. Naturalist, historians and lecturers are aboard each ship to provide background information and regional observations about wildlife. Each person receives his own personal logbook – illustrated and written by the renowned wildlife artists and writers who accompany each voyage. Such logbook, documents the entire expedition and serves as a great source of information, as well as a complete “memory” of the voyage. Imagine being at the wheel of this large sailing ship when one feels the power of the wind propelling her to twelve knots or more, walking on pack ice on the Artic Circle, exploring a penguin rookery on Antarctica, searching for “lost” people in Melanesia or cruising close to the source of the Amazon. It’s what expedition cruising is all about. It’s a completely different experience. In addition, this vessel will be an appropriate addition to the International Tall Ship fleet and will be participating in their events. Encompassing visits to famous world ports and historical significant places.

Further, because of the briefings, lectures and a laboratory at sea, there is an onboard cultural and intellectual element seldom found on other cruise vessels. The ship is designed and equipped to sail in ice-laden waters, and yet have a stern platform together with a shallow enough draft to glide over coral reefs allowing scuba divers to enjoy the beauty of the undersea world. This expedition ship nevertheless provides elegant and comfortable surroundings for up to 300 passengers and a highly trained and knowledgeable staff.
